Caverns:

Energy at your fingertips

There are three possibilities to store natural gas, mineral oil, gas and oil products underground – in salt, in porous rock and in depleted crude oil or natural gas deposits. This is a natural and safe storage method with a relatively small footprint compared to the storage volume.

Special caverns created for this purpose are suitable for storing all of the above energy resources. Utility companies use caverns for storing energy because this enables them to compensate considerable seasonal fluctuations, for example the sharp increase in natural gas consumption at the beginning of winter. Caverns also serve as a strategic reserve in times of crises and ensure continued energy supply.
